I'm your rags to riches story. If I can do it you can too. I was born and raised in Louisiana. We were so poor that we had government comodities on the table. That was surplus cheese and peanut butter.
The day after I graduated from high school in 1966, I moved to Houston, Texas, for the sole purpose of going to work for Southwestern Bell Telephone Company. In those days top pay was $4.00 an hour. Therefore, when you were on overtime you would be earning a dime a minute. Big money in those days.
After a year with Ma Bell, I was drafted to go and fight in Vietnam. I managed to stay alive and come back with two Purple Hearts and one Bronze Star.
Upon returning to Houston in 1969, after two years in the U.S. Army, I went back to work for the phone company. Those were the days when sex was clean and the air was dirty.
I bought my first Corvette, a 1972 Red T-Top, with a 454 CI motor and 4-on-the-floor and a fifth under the seat. Just kidding! This was my birthday present to me and from me.
To earn additional income I started buying and selling Corvettes. You could buy a nice car for $3,000 to $5,000. I'd get an interest only loan so, even at 12% it was only costing $30 to $50 a month to drive America's Sports Car. I'd drive them until they sold, then I'd pay off the loan and keep $1,000 to $3,000 profit. There is no such thing as too much profit, unless it is the other guys or gals.
Last month, I purchased a triple black 2009 Corvette convertible for my most recent birthday. It has 6-on-the-floor, navigation, Z-51 suspension, and dual mode exhaust.
I attended South Texas Junior College at night and received an Associate's Degree in Business. I transfered to Austin, Texas, to finish school at the University of Texas. After arriving in Austin, I discovered you needed to be a full time, day time student to graduate. I had a full time, day time JOB. By the way, I've since learned that JOB stands for "just over broke" or "journey of the broke".
I continued buying and selling Corvettes until 1979 when I discovered you could make more money buying and selling houses. I purchased my first home in Austin in 1976 for $36,000. Three years later, I sold it for $66,000. I thought that was better than buying and selling cars, so I started buying and selling houses.
I've bought and sold over a hundred houses and have fifty rentals which pay a residual income. I still follow foreclosures in three Central Texas counties, but I make a whole lot more money with Ambit Energy, marketing discounted electricity and natural gas.
